Purpose

The overarching purpose of the learning experience is to explore the rich cultural heritage of dream catchers while fostering students' creativity and personal connection to art. Through hands-on crafting activities and cultural exchanges, students immerse themselves in the storytelling and protective symbolism of dream catchers. By respecting traditional methods and incorporating contemporary perspectives, students develop a profound understanding of cultural significance and express their unique narratives through personalized creations.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project include developing an understanding of the cultural significance of dream catchers and their storytelling elements, as well as acquiring hands-on skills in creating art that honors traditional meanings. Students will enhance their socio-emotional skills through reflection and peer assessment, while gaining insights into cultural sensitivity and artistic expression. They will cultivate global perspectives by engaging in cultural comparative studies, exploring the symbolism of protective artifacts through research and presentations. This experience also aims to strengthen students' ability to articulate their understanding and critique artistic choices with an appreciation for cultural craftsmanship.

Products

Students will create personalized dream catchers that reflect their hopes and dreams, using materials that honor traditional meanings and incorporate contemporary personal symbolism. Each dream catcher will be accompanied by a narrative or poem, illustrating its cultural significance and personal connection. Students will curate a written and artistic exhibit to pair with their dream catchers, showcasing their craftsmanship and storytelling abilities.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a vibrant 'Dream Catcher Workshop,' inviting students to join a live virtual session led by an expert in Indigenous crafts. During this immersive event, students will witness hands-on demonstrations of both traditional and modern techniques in creating dream catchers, sparking their curiosity and creativity. Follow the workshop with 'Cultural Exchange Panels,' where students actively participate in discussions comparing dream catchers to protective artifacts from other cultures, exploring common storytelling themes through art.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Dream Catcher Gallery Walk' where students artistically display their crafted pieces in the classroom or hallway. Students will stand by their works, ready to discuss their creative process and the cultural significance embodied in their designs. Invite families, friends, and community members to attend, creating an interactive environment where participants engage with students, ask questions, and appreciate the art while gaining insights into protective storytelling artifacts across cultures.
