Purpose

Students will explore the cultural and historical significance of totem poles, using them as a medium to express their own narratives and connect with broader themes of identity and heritage. This project prompts learners to engage critically with Indigenous artistry, encouraging them to thoughtfully integrate symbolic storytelling elements into their designs. Through hands-on creation and peer collaboration, students build skills in creative expression, analytical thinking, and respectful representation, culminating in a public exhibition that celebrates their learning journey.

Learning goals

Students will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving by exploring the significance of totem poles as visual storytellers and considering elements required for meaningful narratives. They will delve into the cultural history of Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest to appreciate the themes and significance of totem poles, and reflect on their own personal histories to inform their symbolic designs. Through collaboration and feedback during the mid-week peer review, students will enhance their understanding of storytelling elements and integrate these into their totem pole creations. Finally, they will gain communication skills and experience in presenting their work at the 'Totem Tale Festival,' articulating their stories and the cultural meanings they represent.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create multi-layered cardboard totem poles, each segment depicting animal faces or symbolic figures meaningful to their storytelling narrative. The final product will be both a visual artifact and a written narrative explanation detailing the significance of their design choices and cultural connections. The totem poles serve as the centerpiece of an end-of-week exhibition where students share their visual stories and articulate the cultural themes embedded within their creation.

Launch

Begin with an interactive storytelling session led by a recorded video presentation of Indigenous peoples from the Pacific Northwest, highlighting the history and cultural significance of totem poles. Follow this with a discussion where students brainstorm what storytelling elements they can incorporate into their own designs. Encourage students to research and choose symbols and animals that connect to their personal stories, fostering a sense of connection and authenticity from the very start.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Totem Tale Festival' where students transform the classroom into a gallery of creativity. Display each student’s totem pole and allow students to present their creations through oral storytelling, explaining the narratives and cultural significance of their designs to peers, teachers, and parents. Encourage participants to circulate, engaging with the presenters who will rotate sharing the stories behind their totem poles, thereby fostering an interactive and educational atmosphere. This exhibition serves as both a celebration of student achievement and a communal learning experience.
