Purpose

This project invites students to delve into the complex narratives of The Odyssey and the Cold War, drawing parallels between myth and history to illuminate the human quest for peace and survival. Through interactive exhibits, storytelling, and role-playing, students actively engage with and analyze these themes, deepening their understanding of past and present complexities. The multifaceted activities encourage students to creatively reflect on identity, leadership, and societal roles, equipping them with critical thinking skills and a more profound appreciation of cultural and historical contexts.

Learning goals

Students will explore the parallels and themes between The Odyssey and the Cold War, focusing on strategic thinking, leadership challenges, and personal and global journeys towards peace and survival. They will develop skills in critical analysis, narrative creation, and effective communication by designing and presenting interactive exhibitions and digital storytelling projects. Through these activities, students will expand their vocabulary and comprehension across historical and literary contexts, enhancing their ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and confidently.

Products

Students will curate an immersive art exhibition featuring characters and scenes from The Odyssey and Cold War history, with artistic mediums and accompanying statements. They'll create a virtual reality experience simulating a pivotal Cold War event, drawing parallels to Odysseus' journey, requiring strategic interaction. Additionally, students will organize a community storytelling event, narrating and performing stories from both The Odyssey and the Cold War, enhanced by props and audio-visual aids, to bring the narratives vividly to life.

Launch

Set the stage by hosting a 'Myth Meets History Game Day' where students participate in interactive activities that connect scenes from The Odyssey with pivotal Cold War events, sparking curiosity and setting the thematic foundation of the project. Encourage strategic thinking as students solve a 'Hero's Journey Escape Room', tackling challenges reminiscent of Odysseus' trials and Cold War scenarios. Begin the journey with a screening of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, introducing Greek mythology's storytelling style and its thematic parallels with historical episodes from the Cold War.

Exhibition

Students will design 'Global Quest: From Ancient to Modern', an interactive museum exhibit showcasing timelines, art installations, and digital content that draw parallels between The Odyssey's characters and Cold War leaders. At 'Journey to Peace', a virtual art gallery, they will display digital artworks that connect mythology with historical analysis, capped by a live-streamed expert panel. Additionally, at the 'From Ithaca to Iron Curtain' public library event, students will present podcast episodes blending storytelling with musical and visual elements, comparing Odysseus' and Cold War leaders' challenges.
