Purpose

The purpose of the project is to investigate invasive species and their impact on ecosystems, fostering students' analytical, communication, and collaboration skills through real-world research. Students will select and research a specific invasive species, assessing its population and competitive dynamics compared to native species, while also exploring its ecological consequences. Through presentations and a campus exploration, students will share their findings, discuss innovative solutions for mitigating their effects, and develop a deeper understanding of their role in preserving local biodiversity.

Learning goals

Students will investigate invasive species to understand their impact on ecosystems and their competition with native species. Through research, students will identify and analyze data on one specific invasive species, its prevalence in the United States, and resultant ecological challenges. They will communicate their insights via class presentations, refining their ability to articulate complex ideas effectively. Collaborative skills will be nurtured through partner feedback and shared project design experiences.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a detailed research project focusing on a specific invasive species, including its characteristics, impact on local ecosystems, and solutions for minimizing harm. This project culminates in a class-wide presentation where students showcase their findings and engage peers in discussions. Visual aids and data analyzed will support presentations, reflecting understanding and innovative approaches to invasive species issues. Peer critiques and revision will refine projects before the final exhibition.

Launch

Begin the project by introducing students to the concept of invasive species through a dynamic group activity. Organize a virtual tour of the New York Invasive Species website, where students explore various species collaboratively to gather preliminary information. Follow this with an outdoor exploration on campus, giving students the opportunity to identify any invasive species in their immediate environment. Encourage initial discussion and questions to stimulate curiosity and set the stage for in-depth exploration throughout the week.

Exhibition

On the final day of the project, students will hold a class exhibition to showcase their research on invasive species. The room will be themed with visuals that represent the species and ecosystems studied, drawing in visitors. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to participate, offering feedback and engaging in discussions about strategies to address the challenges posed by invasive species. This exhibition provides a community-centric opportunity for students to share their learning and celebrate their investigative efforts.
