Purpose

The purpose of the Genetic Counseling Case File project is to immerse students in the role of genetic counselors, engaging them in realistic scenarios that require critical thinking and prediction skills. By analyzing genetic combinations and inheritance patterns, students explore the impact of genetics on health and traits while developing professional communication skills. The hands-on nature of the project encourages collaboration and empathy, as students prepare to present complex genetic data effectively. Through practical exercises and presentations, students gain a deeper understanding of the implications of genetics in real-world contexts.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of different inheritance patterns and how they affect genetic traits and health outcomes. They will gain skills in constructing Punnett squares and calculating probabilities to predict genetic outcomes. Students will refine their ability to communicate effectively and empathetically, presenting complex genetic information in professional summaries during a simulated counseling session. They will enhance their investigative skills through hands-on activities and exhibit their ability to analyze and critique genetic data in peer sessions.

Standards
  • [Texas] B.8B - predict possible outcomes of various genetic combinations using monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, including non-Mendelian traits of incomplete dominance, codominance, sex-linked traits, and multiple alleles.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create detailed genetic counseling summaries and visual representations, such as slides or infographic summaries, demonstrating the inheritance patterns and their probability calculations. Throughout the project, students will engage in hands-on activities that culminate in simulated genetic counseling sessions, where they will present their findings and recommendations to peers acting as clients. These products will showcase students' ability to analyze complex genetic scenarios and communicate their insights effectively using professional language.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Trait Tracker Symposium' where students have the opportunity to circulate through various stations dedicated to exploring specific inheritance patterns. Engage students in hands-on activities to predict trait outcomes, while discussing the implications of these predictions on future generations. Utilize interactive activities to refine their scientific and professional language, setting the stage for the deeper exploration to follow.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will participate in a 'Genetic Counseling Showcase' where they present their slide presentations or infographic summaries in a rotating gallery format. This event will invite peers, teachers, and community members to engage with the students' work, asking questions and offering feedback. Students will demonstrate their ability to effectively communicate complex genetic concepts, highlighting how inheritance patterns affect health and traits across generations. This showcase will encourage meaningful dialogue, professional presentation skills, and reflection on the real-world applications of their research.
