Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse kindergarten students in the natural world of farming through interactive, hands-on activities that connect them with real-world plant care practices. By visiting a local high school's farm and participating in engaging storytelling, art, and performance projects, students actively explore the essential ways we care for plants and why each method is crucial for growth. This unit aims to cultivate curiosity, empathy, and a deepened understanding of plant life cycles while fostering connections with their community.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project include understanding the basic lifecycle of plants and the essential care required for their growth. Students will gain hands-on experience by observing and interacting with plants in a real-world farm setting, enabling them to identify various plant care methods and articulate their importance. Through art projects and interactive presentations, students will express their learning creatively, demonstrating comprehension of the core principles of plant care and will develop communication skills by sharing their knowledge with peers and family members.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, kindergarten students will create vibrant art projects inspired by their farm visit, illustrating their understanding of the plant lifecycle and important plant care techniques. By the end of the project, students will have crafted detailed plant posters and engaging skits or songs that highlight the importance of plant care, culminating in a lively Plant Parade to share their learning with family and community members. These hands-on and creative outputs will be showcased in a Plant Observation Gallery, providing an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and growth.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, kindergartners will embark on an exploratory trip to Bear Creek High School's farm. During the visit, they will observe various plants, their colors, textures, and shapes, and engage with the high school students who share insights about different plant care methods and their importance for growth. This immersive farm exploration will ignite curiosity and lay the foundation for their project, inspiring them to draw connections between what they observe and their upcoming science-based lessons on planting and farming.

Exhibition

Students will culminate their learning experience with an engaging exhibition showcasing their deepened understanding of plant care. They'll host a Plant Parade, where they perform skits and songs about plant care, using eye-catching, hand-made posters of plants. Parents and high school partners will participate, making it a community celebration. Additionally, students' Plant Observation Gallery will feature artwork and reflections from their farm visit, offering insight into their knowledge and creative expressions. This exhibition not only shares their learning but also strengthens community ties and celebrates student achievements.
