Helpers Perspective Posters

Global Citizen SL.K.3 Product Reflection Critique and Revision Submission Required

Students work in small groups to develop a kid-friendly problem definition. They will create a POV statement from a helper’s viewpoint, ask simple How Might We questions, design picture-based persona cards for diverse helpers, and sketch a basic systems map showing how helpers, families, and neighbors connect. Outputs will be illustrated with drawings and oral explanations and compiled into a class poster gallery.

# What teachers do
1 Begin with a storytelling circle where each student shares a memory or story about a community helper they know. Encourage questions and reflection. (10 min)
2 Introduce the task of creating a 'Helper Perspective Poster.' Explain they will work in groups to draw and write about what the helpers do. (5 min)
3 Divide students into small groups and have them discuss what they learned about their assigned community helper from 'Communities Come Alive Day.' (10 min)
4 Each group develops a simple sentence describing their helper's point of view and how they contribute to San Jose. (5 min)
5 Groups sketch their poster, including drawings of their helper in action and visual symbols representing their impact. (10 min)
6 Host a brief feedback session where each group shares their poster with another group, asking for input and questions. (5 min)
Preparation (4 items)
  • Gather large sheets of drawing paper, crayons, markers, and sample images of community helpers for inspiration.
  • Create a visual anchor chart listing different community helpers and their roles.
  • Prepare a storytelling circle space with comfortable seating arranged in a circle.
  • Have simple sentence templates ready to guide students in creating their POV statements.
Student-facing instructions
You will work in small groups to create a Helper Perspective Poster. First, share stories about community helpers you know. Then, in your group, choose a helper and discuss what you've learned about them. Create a sentence that tells us what your helper thinks about their job and their impact. Draw pictures that show what your helper does and include symbols to explain their role. Remember to talk to each other and ask questions if you need help.
