Purpose

In this project, first-grade students will collaboratively explore Mexican ecosystems and the diverse animals that inhabit them. They will engage in research and creative expression by designing and filming a guided tour of a fictional Mexican zoo, presenting their findings and insights. Through this immersive experience, students will hone their communication skills and critical thinking as they work in peer groups to share, revise, and exhibit their knowledge through video production. The project emphasizes teamwork, effective communication, content expertise in biodiversity, and creative problem-solving, allowing students to connect deeply with their learning and celebrate Mexico's status as a megadiverse country.

Learning goals

Students will collaborate to design a project that highlights the diversity and significance of Mexican animals and ecosystems, aiming to build relational agency and leadership skills. They will engage in effective communication by conducting peer interviews and presenting findings in a video exhibition, practicing empathy and public speaking. Through crafting a guided tour and nature show segments, students will apply their content expertise by researching facts and understanding Mexico's status as a megadiverse country. Critical thinking and problem-solving will be fostered as students explore innovative approaches to presenting complex information about ecosystem diversity in engaging and accessible formats.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaborate with peers to design and film a guided tour video of a fictional Mexican zoo, showcasing the diverse animals they researched, complete with engaging facts and visuals. In small groups, they will produce a nature show segment, bringing to life insights about Mexican ecosystems and highlighting why the country is a megadiverse region. Students will reflect on their work by critically evaluating their videos and making revisions based on peer feedback. These video projects provide hands-on opportunities for students to exercise communication, creativity, and leadership as they express their newfound knowledge.

Launch

Students will embark on their project with an "Animal Investigator Adventure," beginning with a virtual exploration of Mexican ecosystems through interactive storytelling. They will assume the role of wildlife investigators, using clues to discover various animals unique to Mexico's diverse habitats. This narrative exploration will spark curiosity and prompt students to select an animal they are excited to investigate further, laying the groundwork for their collaborative research and video presentations.

Exhibition

Students will host a virtual zoo tour, inviting classmates, teachers, and family members to watch their video guide of Mexican animals. After the virtual visit, a live Q&A session will allow students to answer questions about their research and share interesting facts they discovered. The nature show segment will be showcased during a class event, where students can present their videos and discuss the significance of Mexico's biodiversity. This exhibition will provide a platform for students to express their learning and communicate effectively with an audience.
