Purpose

This project aims to develop students' understanding of personal health and safety through hands-on activities that apply real-world contexts. By integrating the study of human anatomy, community service, and personal planning, students create connections between individual and community well-being. The project fosters critical thinking, communication, and self-directed learning as students engage with their peers and local community in meaningful ways, ultimately developing practical strategies for maintaining hygiene and preventing injury.

Learning goals

Students will develop a personal hygiene plan and understand the importance of maintaining health to prevent diseases. They will explore body systems, particularly the digestive system, and create educational 3D models to display their knowledge of organ functions and care. Throughout the project, students will apply self-reflection and peer feedback in crafting and revising health and safety booklets, while actively contributing to community health initiatives through cleanup events and exhibitions. These activities encourage critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning, fostering essential skills aligned with state standards.

Standards
  • [North Carolina] PE.5.HF.3.3 - Develop personal goals to improve three or more of the health-related fitness components.
  • [North Carolina] PE.5.PR.4.2 - Demonstrate understanding of the social benefits gained from participating in physical activities to achieve common goals.
  • [North Carolina] PE.5.PR.4.1 - Demonstrate engagement in physical activity with responsible interpersonal behavior.
  • [North Carolina] PE.5.PR.4.3 - Demonstrate age-appropriate safety principles independently when engaging in various physical activities.
  • [North Carolina] PE.5.HF.3.1 - Identify differences between health-related and skill-related fitness components.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create 3D models of the digestive system using everyday materials to showcase the functions and care of each organ involved. As a culminating product, they will design and distribute personal health and safety booklets containing their personal hygiene plans and strategies for injury prevention. These booklets will be presented at the "Health & Safety Expo," allowing students to exhibit knowledge through interactive displays and peer feedback activities.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic "Body Systems Fair," where students dive into exploring various human body systems through interactive stations. Each station features hands-on models, engaging activities, and informative displays to stimulate curiosity about human anatomy and health. Students collaborate to discover key functions and the care needed for different body systems, setting the stage for deeper investigation into their personal health and hygiene plans.

Exhibition

Organize an 'Eco-Clean Day', where students collaborate with environmental groups for a community clean-up event. Set up educational stations highlighting the connection between personal hygiene, environmental health, and disease prevention through interactive and informative displays. Students will guide participants in engaging activities and distribute the personal health and safety booklets they crafted. This event will showcase their learning achievements while fostering community engagement and awareness.
