Purpose

This learning experience equips students with practical strategies for maintaining personal health and safety through a hands-on approach. By constructing 3D models and engaging in community events, students gain a deeper understanding of body systems and the importance of hygiene in disease prevention. The curriculum fosters critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning as students develop, share, and refine their personal hygiene plans.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of human body systems, with a focus on the digestive system, by creating 3D models from everyday materials and identifying the function and care of each organ involved. They will design personal hygiene plans that promote health, prevent disease, and reflect on their effectiveness through peer discussions and feedback. Additionally, students will expand their community involvement and communication skills by organizing and participating in events that highlight the connection between personal health and environmental well-being.

Standards
  • [North Carolina] LS.5.1.2 - Use models to compare the major systems of the human body (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, skeletal, nervous) as it relates to their functions necessary for life.
  • [North Carolina] LS.5.1.1 - Use models to recognize the organizational structure of humans as a multicellular organism (cell, tissue, organ, system, organism).
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create comprehensive personal health and safety booklets filled with information on personal hygiene practices, body system education, and steps for managing unintentional injuries. They will also develop interactive posters to showcase their hygiene plans and safety strategies at the Health & Safety Expo. Additionally, students will construct 3D models of the digestive system from everyday materials to deepen their understanding of how the body functions.

Launch

Host an interactive "Body Systems Fair" in class where students rotate between stations equipped with hands-on models and activities, exploring different human body systems. Allow students to construct 3D models of organs using everyday materials, actively engaging in collaborative tasks. Promote problem-solving and communication by allowing peers to offer guidance and support in constructing models, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm at the onset of the project.

Exhibition

Facilitate a 'Eco-Clean Day' event where students organize a community clean-up in collaboration with environmental groups. Set up educational stations to demonstrate the connection between personal hygiene, environmental health, and disease prevention. Students present their personal health and safety booklets and interactive displays to engage the community, enhancing learning through active participation.
