Products

Students will rewrite their narrative paragraphs, incorporating dialogue, transition words, and sensory details to clearly depict an event from the perspective of their colonial character. They will focus on refining and enhancing their storytelling by selecting and expanding on dialogue lines, using vibrant sensory details, and employing effective transitional phrases. This revised narrative will serve as a reflection of their growth in narrative writing, demonstrating their ability to convey experiences through immersive and engaging techniques.

Launch

Introduce the lesson by reading a dynamic excerpt from "Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak," focusing on the vivid imagery and lively dialogue. Invite students to close their eyes and imagine stepping into a colonial scene, identifying sensory elements they might experience, such as the sounds, smells, and colors. Have students brainstorm and share ideas in pairs about how incorporating these details can bring their character's story to life, using dialogue and transitional words to move the narrative forward.

Exhibition

To exhibit their learning, students will engage in a "Colonial Voices Express" activity. They will come together in small groups to read aloud their enhanced narrative scenes, focusing on the inclusion of dialogue, sensory details, and transition words. Peers will offer supportive feedback on the impact of these narrative techniques. Additionally, students will contribute their work to a class anthology of colonial narratives, creatively illustrated and displayed in the classroom or school hallway for others to enjoy and learn from.
