Purpose

This project aims to enable students to engage deeply with the historical migration and trade patterns of Early America through the creation of interactive maps. By integrating critical historical analysis with personal and community narratives, students will develop a more profound understanding of how past events shape current social, political, and economic realities. The project also seeks to foster collaboration, reflection, and communication skills by involving students in meaningful interactions with community partners and each other, ultimately fostering a sense of connection and relevance between their learning and their lives.

Learning goals

Students will gain a deep understanding of how physical and political features shaped historical events and movements in Early America, fostering adaptation to the environment. By analyzing patterns of trade and migration, students will explore the ensuing cultural exchanges and how these interactions influenced the nation's development. Collaborative exploration with community partners will broaden students' perspectives, enabling them to connect historical narratives with personal experiences and community histories to interpret the political, economic, and social impacts of diverse group interactions.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create interactive maps that dynamically illustrate the journeys of different groups or individuals, incorporating both historical and digital elements. These maps will be combined with multimedia presentations, featuring student-created videos and interviews with community experts, to provide a comprehensive narrative on historical migrations and trade patterns. By integrating personal migration stories, students will draw connections between past and present, creating a rich tapestry of cultural exchanges and geographical insights.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Mapmakers' Maker Day,' where students dive into the exciting world of cartography using digital tools and physical resources from local museums. Students will have the opportunity to create rice maps of a hypothetical place, learn about basic geography, and understand map features in an interactive and engaging setting. This initial hands-on experience sets the stage for students to collectively brainstorm and collaborate on integrating complex historical data into the interactive maps they will develop throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host an 'Explorer's Showcase' where they present their interactive maps alongside multimedia presentations that include videos and interviews with community experts. Families and community members are invited to participate, engaging with students as they share historical insights and draw parallels to their own migration stories or experiences. The showcase encourages dialogue, reflection circles, and deeper connections between past events and current community contexts, creating a platform for understanding and appreciation of migration's impact on cultural exchanges and development.
