Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in the historical context of settling North Dakota during the 1800s through an engaging, hands-on game-based experience. Students will creatively examine different immigrant groups, including Native Americans, through interactive challenges and strategic commerce activities. By constructing models and reflecting daily on their strategies, students collaborate in teams to deepen their understanding of North Dakota's diverse cultural heritage and settlement stories.

Learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of the cultural and historical dynamics of different immigrant groups and Native Americans who settled in North Dakota in the 1800s. They will build models to represent these groups, engaging in role-play and strategic decision-making to simulate the challenges faced during the settlement period. Through daily feedback and intentional reflections, students will refine their approaches, enhancing collaboration skills and critical thinking. Finally, students will participate in exhibitions with peers to demonstrate their insights and learning through a comprehensive game experience.

Products

Students will collaborate in teams to create a dynamic board game that simulates the experience of settlers in North Dakota during the 1800s. Each group will design unique game pieces including challenge cards that draw from historical scenarios, trading/commerce cards that facilitate interactions, and models representing their assigned immigrant group. Throughout the week, teams will refine their game components based on daily feedback and insights, culminating in a full playthrough and exhibition where each group showcases their game to peers. This interactive product serves as a tangible model to explore the essential question and demonstrate their understanding of historical North Dakota studies.

Launch

Students will begin by participating in an immersive role-play, embodying the immigrant groups and Native Americans as they arrive in North Dakota. Using a mix of multimedia resources, they’ll explore the initial challenges settlers faced, sparking curiosity and setting the historical context for the game. They'll create personal artifacts or symbols that represent their assigned group, which will be used throughout the game, fostering understanding of cultural identity and the diverse narratives found in their communities.

Exhibition

At the end of the week-long game experience, students will participate in a role-playing exhibition where each team presents the unique challenges, victories, and strategies faced by their historical group while settling North Dakota. They will showcase their game models, including personalized game pieces and cards, to peers and educators, illustrating their understanding of the diverse historical experiences. Students will offer feedback on each other's presentations, engaging in meaningful discussions that highlight different perspectives and foster deeper connections to North Dakota's history.
