Concept Sketches and Matrix

Product Assessment Exhibition Reflection Core Content Essential Question Critique and Revision Submission Required

In small groups, students generate a wide range of game idea concepts that reflect settlers’ experiences in North Dakota. They capture quick notes, produce 2–3 simple concept sketches or storyboards, and complete a simple feasibility/impact matrix. Each group selects their top 3 concepts and writes a brief rationale for why these ideas best meet the project goals. Outputs are compiled into a shared concept pack to guide prototype development.

2 [45 min] Create quick notes and produce 2-3 simple concept sketches or storyboards that represent your group's best ideas.
3 [60 min] Complete a simple feasibility/impact matrix to evaluate the ideas based on historical accuracy, engagement, and practicality.
4 [45 min] Select the top 3 concepts your group thinks best meet the project goals, writing a brief rationale for each.
5 [60 min] Share concepts and matrices with other groups and engage in collaborative critique, offering feedback and suggestions for improvement.
6 [20 min] Reflect on feedback received and adjust sketches and rationale documentation accordingly.
Preparation (3 items)
  • Prepare materials such as blank paper, pencils, colored markers, and chart paper for concept sketches and matrices.
  • Create visual aids and anchor charts highlighting key historical facts and immigrant groups relevant to North Dakota’s settlement for inspiration.
  • Set up group tables with necessary materials, ensuring each group has a dedicated workspace.
Student-facing instructions
You will work in small groups to brainstorm and sketch game ideas about settlers in North Dakota. Use your sketches to show what you think happened and what settlers might have faced. Draw your ideas, then fill out a chart to think about how your ideas work in the game. Choose your best ideas and explain why. Share your ideas with other groups and listen to their feedback to make your plans even better.
