Purpose

In this independent study health class, students will research and write about the core components of physical, mental, and sexual health, focusing on how they contribute to a balanced life. Students will develop educational articles based on their investigations into health topics relevant to their personal and community interests. This project emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving as students navigate complex health issues, with opportunities for self-reflection to refine their understanding and communication skills.

Learning goals

Students will conduct extensive research to understand physical, emotional, and sexual health as key components of a balanced life. They will write educational articles that critically analyze real-world health issues, incorporating diverse perspectives to create comprehensive viewpoints. Through personal health assessments, students will engage in self-reflection to guide their learning journey. Each article will be refined through a process of critique and revision, focusing primarily on self-directed improvement. The project will culminate in individual teacher reviews that assess content expertise and effective communication through written work.

Products

During this four-week independent study, students will produce a series of educational articles focusing on the key aspects of physical, mental, and sexual health. The process involves self-directed research and writing, with minimal interaction, allowing students to delve deeply into health topics independently. Each article will be critiqued and revised through self-reflection and teacher feedback, culminating in a personal health assessment and an individual review of their completed work. This approach facilitates an in-depth exploration of health concepts and content expertise.

Launch

Students will start the independent study health class by selecting individual health topics they find personally significant from the three critical domains: physical, mental, and sexual health. They will then conduct initial research to understand the impact of these health aspects on their lives, using this to outline a series of articles they will write. This launch sets a foundation for their exploration, fostering self-directed research and writing without peer interaction. Students will establish personal goals and strategies for monitoring their progress, encouraging reflective learning and directed exploration from the start.

Exhibition

Students will submit their series of health articles for an individual review with the teacher, focusing on their insights into physical, mental, and sexual health. This personalized review will provide direct feedback for the author to refine their research and writing. The final articles will be compiled into a personal health journal, showcasing each student's comprehensive understanding of health and wellbeing.
