Purpose

Students will actively explore the impact of healthcare access and nutrition on prenatal development through collaborative projects and community involvement. By developing educational campaigns for expectant parents and hosting a community event, students will better understand healthcare disparities and support strategies. This experience emphasizes critical thinking and societal awareness, allowing students to directly engage with professionals and reflect on their learning for personal growth and informed decision-making regarding health and wellness.

Learning goals

Students will explore the influence of healthcare access and nutrition on prenatal development, analyzing real-world case studies and data. They will collaboratively design an educational campaign for expectant parents to communicate best practices in prenatal health. Engaging with healthcare professionals during a virtual visit, students will deepen their understanding and relate the insights gained to personal and community contexts, which they will then present at a community event.

Products

Students will collaboratively design a multimedia educational campaign, including posters, infographics, and videos that present real-world case studies of prenatal development scenarios influenced by healthcare access and nutrition. This project will involve research, data analysis, and consultations with healthcare professionals to inform their creations. The final products will be shared at the 'Healthy Start Community Event,' providing students the opportunity to engage with the community and gather feedback.

Launch

Launch the lesson with an interactive game called "Life's Little Steps," where students navigate different scenarios related to prenatal healthcare and nutrition choices. Each decision they make affects the well-being of a simulated unborn child, prompting them to think critically about potential outcomes. Follow the game with a reflective circle discussion where students share thought processes and insights, linking them to the essential question and fostering a deeper connection to real-world implications.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Healthy Start Community Event' where students present visual multimedia projects that address the effects of healthcare and nutrition on prenatal development. The event should include interactive stations where students, acting as informed facilitators, engage attendees using case studies, demonstration models, and collected data. Invite community members and health professionals as guests to foster discussions, encouraging students to articulate their understandings clearly and confidently. Implement feedback from the audience to help students reflect and deepen their learning experiences post-event.
