Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to challenge you to explore unfamiliar territories, build a practical and innovative product from scratch, and develop essential 21st-century skills. By creating a functional speaker within a toolbox, you'll engage in hands-on learning that integrates creativity, technical knowledge, and problem-solving. This project will foster collaboration and effective communication with your peers, push you to think critically and resourcefully, and help you become a self-directed learner who reflects on and adapts their approach based on experience and feedback.

Learning goals

Throughout this project, gain practical knowledge of basic electronics, enhancing your understanding of wiring, power sources, and speaker components. Sharpen your problem-solving abilities by experimenting with innovative approaches to design and construct a functional speaker from a toolbox, reflecting on your progress and challenges along the way. Develop collaborative skills by working with peers to co-design elements and make shared decisions, while practicing effective communication through presenting your work and engaging in self-directed learning and reflection.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Design and build a functional speaker within a mini toolbox, transforming a simple object into a creative and functional piece. Document the journey with photos and videos, highlighting key phases of development. Capture and present your troubleshooting process, illustrating challenges faced and solutions implemented. Facilitate a demonstration to showcase the operating speaker and engage peers in discussing the technical and creative steps involved.

Launch

Start your project with an interactive workshop where you explore different types of speakers and their designs. Disassemble a simple speaker to understand its components and functions, allowing you to get hands-on experience with the inner workings. Brainstorm with your peers to compile a list of creative ideas and potential challenges you might face in transforming a toolbox into a speaker, fostering collaboration and innovative thinking right from the beginning.

Exhibition

Host a showcase where you invite peers, teachers, and family to interact with your completed toolbox speaker. Prepare a short presentation to describe your design process, demonstrate its functionality, and discuss the challenges you overcame. Set up a feedback station where attendees can provide written feedback on your project and your communication skills, offering insights for future improvement. Consider recording the exhibition to reflect on your presentation and audience engagement, which will support your self-directed learning journey.
