Purpose

This project aims to cultivate environmental stewardship in second-grade students by immersing them in the practical and meaningful work of waste management. Through collaboration with their peers and the community partner, 'Recycle Birge,' students will develop critical thinking skills as they explore innovative solutions to reduce and recycle waste effectively. By engaging directly with real-world challenges, students will enhance communication skills, deepen their content expertise, and foster self-directed learning, contributing to a sustainable future for their community.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively develop video instructions for the community partner, Recycle Birge, honing their skills in collaboration, effective communication, and empathy. Through hands-on activities, such as sorting and recycling simulations, they enhance critical thinking and problem-solving by exploring diverse pathways to environmental improvement. The project empowers students to engage in self-directed learning through reflection journals and feedback sessions, fostering a sense of responsibility in their roles as environmental advocates both in the school and the wider community.

Competencies

Products

Each student will develop informative posters illustrating step-by-step waste sorting processes to display locally, reinforcing community-wide recycling habits. Additionally, small teams will produce engaging video instructions that demonstrate how to reduce waste effectively, sharing both individual and collective insights on proper trash sorting. These products serve dual purposes, educating others while instilling a sense of accomplishment as students contribute meaningful resources to their community.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive event called 'Trash Treasures Hunt,' where students explore the school grounds to collect different materials, then sort them into the correct recycling bins. This hands-on activity allows students to immediately apply sorting skills while fostering engagement and teamwork. Following the hunt, students participate in a group discussion to share discoveries and insights about the importance of proper trash sorting right from the start.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a 'Recycle Rally' where they present video instructions as part of a larger school event highlighting environmental tips. Families will join workshops led by 'Recycle Birge', exploring sustainable practices. Additionally, a 'Future Protectors Broadcast' will feature student-led presentation assemblies, showcasing projects intertwined with personal reflections and commitments to waste reduction.
