Purpose

Engage in a comprehensive, hands-on exploration of go-kart engineering, integrating mechanical design and energy efficiency with a focus on safety principles. Construct and test your go-kart, balancing technical performance and structural integrity. Collaboratively solve problems, analyze impact, and iterate designs to achieve a successful balance between frame durability, power delivery, and rider safety.

Learning goals

Design a functional go-kart by collaboratively constructing and testing various frame configurations and power sources, analyzing their impact on speed, stability, and safety features. Develop problem-solving skills by navigating engineering challenges, implementing necessary design modifications, and documenting the process through detailed reflections. Demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking to optimize design choices and understand the interplay between mechanical systems and safety considerations. Engage in discussions to compare strategies and insights on balancing performance with reliable safety standards.

Products

By the end of this project, you will create a fully functioning go-kart that demonstrates a well-balanced integration of frame durability, engine power, and safety features. Throughout the process, you will document your design decisions in a digital portfolio, including sketches, calculations, and reflections on trial runs. You will also produce a safety manual tailored to your go-kart's specifications, ensuring both its efficient operation and rider safety.

Launch

Begin your go-kart project by participating in a tour of a local automotive shop or go-kart racing facility, where you can see real-world examples of different go-kart models and their components. After the tour, engage in a group discussion to identify key elements that make a go-kart successful in terms of speed, safety, and design. Back in the classroom, explore various online resources that showcase innovative go-kart designs and technologies to inspire your project. This initial experience sets the stage for your creative and technical journey into building your own go-kart.

Exhibition

Host a "Go-Kart Showcase Day" where you can race your built go-karts on a safe, designated track. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to observe and learn about your design process, the challenges you faced, and solutions you implemented. Set up a poster session or exhibit area to display your design sketches, material selections, and safety features, allowing for interactive discussions and feedback on your project outcomes.
