Assessment
Launch the Empathize phase by connecting with people who reflect your portfolio audience. In small groups, interview at least two community members or mentors who are affected by the project or who represent potential viewers. Observe their context, ask open questions, and capture key needs, preferences, and frustrations. Record interview notes and a few quick observations to seed your empathy work.

- Arrange for community members or mentors willing to participate in interviews.
- Create and print interview guidelines and question templates for student use.
- Prepare a quiet space conducive to interviews and group discussions.
Student-facing instructions
Your task is to meet and interview community members or mentors who represent your portfolio audience. In small groups, you will use the interview guidelines to devise questions that will help you understand the users' needs and preferences. Conduct the interviews with empathy, take notes, and then return to your group to discuss and reflect on what you've learned. Use your insights to inform your digital portfolio design.
