Purpose

The purpose of this project is to create engaging YouTube videos that explore San Diego's diverse cultures through local businesses, fostering a deeper appreciation and support for them within the community. Delve into the cultural significance of each location to strengthen connections with community members and small business owners, emphasizing the importance of supporting local enterprises over larger corporations. Working independently, you will hone skills in video editing, research, and communication, generating informative content while reflecting community aspirations.

Learning goals

Work independently to hone communication skills by interviewing small business owners about the cultural significance of their enterprises. Enhance your video editing and research capacities to craft compelling videos that engage San Diego viewers. Demonstrate self-directed learning through reflective assessments on feedback from peers, teachers, and audience analytics. Apply critical thinking to explore the relationship between cultural understanding and community support for local businesses.

Products

Create five YouTube videos that showcase San Diego's unique cultural landscape through local businesses, focusing on restaurants, cafes, beaches, dessert spots, and community centers. Conduct interviews with business owners to highlight their cultural narratives and community impact. Refine your video editing skills independently to ensure each video is compelling and engaging, using feedback from community interactions and views. Incorporate informative visuals and storytelling techniques to encourage viewers to support San Diego's small businesses and share your channel publicly for broader community feedback.

Launch

Initiate your project with an exploratory field trip to key local businesses and cultural sites throughout San Diego. Use this time to collect preliminary footage, engage in conversations with business owners and community members, and gather personal insights into the community’s cultural fabric. Kickstart your series by documenting these initial observations in a captivating video blog that sets the stage for your future content and invites viewers to join you on this journey.

Exhibition

Organize a virtual premiere of your videos, inviting the local business owners featured, peers, teachers, and community members through an online platform. Present a digital gallery of your research, video editing technique, and reflections on cultural significance for each location using a blog or website. Host a live Q&A session with business owners, allowing them to share cultural stories and community connections while you gather feedback to assess your project's impact on fostering appreciation for local businesses.
