Deliverable

POV and HMW Drafts

Effective Communication Self Directed Learning Content Expertise Collaboration Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Essential Question Critique and Revision Submission Required

In this one-hour sprint, you will synthesize insights from your San Diego field trip into a user-centered problem frame: craft a first POV statement, generate How Might We questions, build concise user personas, and sketch a simple problem tree or systems map. Collect empathy artifacts from your notes or interviews (a memorable quote, a photo, or a field note) and test your draft with a partner, iterating quickly to improve clarity and relevance. Your outputs will include a POV statement, a set of HMW questions, 2-3 persona profiles, and a basic systems map that links cultural significance to community support for local businesses.

# What teachers do
1 Introduction and context setting: Review the insights and artifacts collected from the San Diego field trip, explaining how they will be used. (20 min)
2 Draft a Point Of View (POV) statement: Using your field trip notes and learnings, create a concise POV statement that reflects cultural significance and potential for community support. (30 min)
3 Generate How Might We (HMW) questions: Formulate 3-5 HMW questions that explore innovative ways to leverage cultural significance to enhance community support for local businesses. (40 min)
4 Develop Personas: Based on your field trip experiences, create 2-3 user personas that represent different stakeholders (e.g., business owners, community members). (40 min)
5 Create a Systems Map: Sketch a basic systems map linking cultural significance and community support dynamics. (40 min)
6 Peer Review and Feedback: Pair up to present your drafts, receiving feedback for clarity and relevance to refine your outputs. (60 min)
7 Revision and Finalization: Use feedback to make revisions to your POV statement, HMW questions, personas, and systems map. Ensure alignment with essential question. (40 min)
Preparation (3 items)
  • Prepare materials for field trip insight review, including any artifacts, notes, or recordings from the visit.
  • Ensure access to sketching tools for persona and systems map creation.
  • Facilitate a collaborative space where participants can share and receive feedback on their drafts, including digital or physical sharing tools.
Student-facing instructions
During this activity, you will convert insights from your San Diego field trip into actionable design elements. Begin by creating a Point Of View (POV) statement that encapsulates cultural significance. Next, draft several 'How Might We' (HMW) questions to stimulate innovative solutions for community support. Develop user personas that embody the key stakeholders involved, and sketch a systems map illustrating the relationship between cultural significance and community dynamics. You will then present your points for peer review, allowing feedback to guide final revisions. You'll need your field notes, sketching tools, and mindset ready for collaborative revision.
