Purpose

Your project aims to critically examine and elucidate the complexities of gun laws and classifications, encouraging viewers to question the status quo while gaining a deeper understanding of firearms themselves. You will engage with diverse perspectives to create a video essay that challenges misconceptions and highlights legislative ineffectiveness. Through your exploration, you strive to inform and spark meaningful dialogue, driving thoughtful and informed discourse on a contentious subject.

Learning goals

Analyze the complexities of U.S. gun laws and their historical context, and evaluate how they impact public perception and policy. Develop critical thinking skills by examining the loopholes within current legislation and considering their implications from multiple perspectives. Enhance communication skills by crafting an informative and thought-provoking video essay, utilizing effective filming and editing techniques. Engage with community partners and peers to gather diverse viewpoints and refine your argument through continuous critique and revision. Demonstrate understanding through written analysis and video presentation, showcasing your ability to synthesize information and articulate your insights clearly.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, you'll create storyboards, draft scripts, and curate source material to encompass various perspectives on firearms. You'll conduct video interviews with local experts and community advocates to gather diverse insights. By the end, you'll produce a comprehensive video essay, incorporating your research, interviews, and editing skills to address the complexities of gun laws and their societal impacts.

Launch

Kick off your project by hosting a discussion panel on recent incidents involving firearms, such as school shootings and ICE-related events. Invite community members or local experts from safety organizations and historical channels to share their perspectives. Use this platform to introduce the essential question, highlighting the urgency of understanding gun laws, public opinion, and underlying misconceptions. Encourage participants to share initial thoughts and questions, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration throughout the project.

Exhibition

Organize a community screening event where you share your video essay with peers, teachers, and invited local community members. Create discussion stations around the screening area where attendees can engage in dialogue about gun laws, your findings, and reflections shared in the video. Incorporate a Q&A session after the viewing to address thoughts, questions, and reflections. Display your research process, storyboard, and editing choices on posters or digital screens to give insight into your development journey. Consider collaborating with local advocacy groups to extend the reach of the screening and foster a broader community conversation.
