Purpose

Your project aims to blend entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, and community engagement by advancing your bread brand while developing customized baking equipment. Through collaboration with a local bakery, you'll gain insights into both baking artistry and business acumen. You'll explore what makes experiences memorable by designing, baking, and sharing your creations in a community setting. Your work culminates in a tangible, meaningful exhibition, reflecting on effective communication, problem-solving, and content expertise.

Learning goals

Develop innovative approaches to establish and advertise your bread brand, deepening your understanding of branding and marketing within the community context. Gain hands-on experience in baking and tool crafting, enhancing your skills with starters and ingredient intricacies. Improve effective communication by presenting your work at the pop-up bakery event and during critique sessions with community partners. Collaborate with peers and professionals to co-design baking equipment prototypes and strengthen decision-making and leadership skills throughout the project. Reflect on your critical thinking and marketing strategies to understand what makes experiences memorable.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Develop a unique line of bread products that align with your brand, featuring variations such as artisan loaves, whole grain options, and specialty breads. Design and craft functional, handmade baking equipment like ovens and mixing bowls tailored to your baking process. By the end of the project, create a collaborative venture integrating your breads with a coffee stand, enhancing their menu with thoughtfully paired pastries and coffee offerings.

Launch

Begin with a ‘Design & Dough Workshop,’ where you dive hands-on into the creative process of crafting your own baking tool prototypes. Collaborate with peers to generate innovative ideas and receive valuable feedback to refine your designs. Set the stage by sharing the essential question, "What does it mean to make something memorable?" and inspire an open dialogue to spark creativity.

Exhibition

Organize an engaging "Bread & Brew Extravaganza" at IZOLA, where you present your bread brand and homemade baking equipment alongside Cup-o-Diem's coffee offerings. Encourage community interaction by inviting guests to sample and provide feedback on the products, while showcasing the journey of your project. This pop-up event allows you to answer the essential question, "What does it mean to make something memorable?" through a collective, sensory experience.
