Purpose

The purpose of this project is to create a tangible learning journey that blends science fiction concepts with real-world engineering applications, challenging you to push boundaries and think innovatively. Through designing a scaled-down Halo Pelican model, you will expand your engineering skills, collaborate with experts, and explore how cutting-edge technology can be harnessed to enhance military safety. By engaging in this hands-on experience, you will deepen your understanding of mechanical design, aerodynamics, and rapid prototyping while addressing meaningful questions relevant to your community's future and safety needs.

Learning goals

Your learning goals for this project include mastering mechanical design principles through CAD software, understanding materials science for creating a durable model, and applying aerodynamics concepts to test flight mechanics. You will refine rapid prototyping skills by developing functional parts using technologies like 3D printing. Moreover, you will enhance collaboration skills by working with mentors and peers, critically solve design challenges authentically, and self-direct your learning journey by documenting progress and iterating designs based on feedback.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Develop a functional, scaled-down version of the Halo Pelican, integrating innovative technology and showcasing its advanced capabilities for military safety applications. Create prototypes of various components, utilizing CAD designs, 3D printed parts, and aerodynamic testing. Exhibit your final product at a live demonstration, where operational capabilities such as cargo management and safety features are highlighted. Throughout the project, maintain a comprehensive project journal documenting your design journey, challenges addressed, and evolving solutions. This journal, along with live demonstrations and test-flight simulations, will form critical reflective and assessment components of the project.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Sci-Fi Solutions Workshop' where you will collaborate with peers to brainstorm and prototype ideas using existing technology for the Halo Pelican design. You will engage in rapid prototyping techniques to bring futuristic concepts to life, working collaboratively to overcome design challenges. Conclude the day with presentations of your initial prototypes, encouraging feedback and fostering a shared vision for the project's direction.

Exhibition

Present your work by creating an 'Engineering Odyssey: Space and Safety' interactive presentation in the school's auditorium. Use multimedia elements to share your key learning moments, challenges, and innovative solutions. Include a demonstration of your Halo Pelican model, highlighting its features and capabilities. Engage the audience with real-time voting on potential next steps for technological advancements, and incorporate their feedback into future iterations of your project.
