Purpose

Your project aims to create pottery pieces that reflect how you perceive the world around you while incorporating uplifting messages to foster positivity and mental well-being. By engaging in this artistic process, you will develop your pottery skills, enhance your communication and collaboration abilities, and explore innovative approaches to mental health advocacy. Additionally, your work will contribute to creating a supportive atmosphere in your community and school, offering an impactful way to influence the perspectives of your peers and family.

Learning goals

Your learning goals are to master hand-building techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab, along with understanding the basics of sculpture design and the firing processes. Explore the psychological impact of uplifting messages through active engagement with school counselors, effectively applying these insights in your pottery work. Cultivate effective communication and collaboration skills by partnering with community members, receiving peer feedback, and co-designing activities. Foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as you navigate the artistic and emotional challenges in your project, while growing in self-directed learning through continuous reflection and adaptation.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the project, you'll create various pottery pieces, showcasing different hand-building techniques and artistic styles. These pieces will incorporate uplifting messages, ready to be strategically placed around your school to promote mental wellness. By the end, you'll present a finished collection that reflects your personal perspective and mastery of pottery, accompanied by design sketches and an online journal documenting your creative journey and emotional insights.

Launch

Begin by organizing an 'Artistic Intentions Launch Party,' where you set up interactive stations that enable your peers to express their unique perspectives through various creative outlets like drawing, painting, or sculpting. Invite school counselors to participate, sharing insights on incorporating uplifting messages into your art. This will help set the tone for the project, building a collaborative atmosphere focused on personal expression and mental well-being.

Exhibition

Organize an exhibition where your pottery pieces and sketches are displayed throughout the school, inviting peers, family, and community partners to view and discuss your work. Arrange a gallery walk during the exhibition for guests to leave feedback and reflections on your displayed art pieces, enhancing the dialogue around personal perspectives and the impact of uplifting messages. Facilitate interactive sessions where attendees can create quick pottery pieces and share what they represent personally, engaging everyone in the deeper learning experience.
