Purpose

Immerse yourself in a five-week exploration that connects lifestyle photography with the rich narratives of local farmers markets. Engage deeply with community partners, utilizing photography to capture and celebrate the imperfect beauty and vibrancy of vendors' stories, embodying sustainability and cultural heritage. This real-world learning journey will hone your critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills as you develop a profound understanding of visual storytelling and its impact.

Learning goals

Explore the principles of lifestyle photography by documenting vendors' stories to celebrate community and sustainability visually. Develop communication and collaboration skills as you engage with vendors and peers, co-designing your project narrative. Practice critical thinking to capture the market's essence, using 'cottage core' aesthetics to highlight natural imperfections. Strengthen your academic mindset by reflecting on your work, building a sense of identity and belonging through creative expression. Enhance your problem-solving abilities by integrating photography techniques that tell compelling and authentic stories.

Products

Craft a documentary short film that merges your captured images and vendor sound bites, narrating the journey of visual storytelling. Develop a virtual reality experience allowing users to explore your photography, experiencing vendors' textures and sounds. Create an interactive digital photo gallery with embedded interviews, inviting visitors to visually and audibly explore market stories and share their interpretations.

Launch

Begin your project with the 'Narratives & Nostalgia' market tour, guided by a local historian who unveils the rich cultural and community significance of the farmers market. This experience will provide you with context and inspiration, laying the groundwork for identifying stories to capture through photography. Follow this with the 'Capture & Connect' workshop hosted by a local lifestyle photographer, where you'll dive into hands-on photography techniques while engaging with vendors to gather their narratives, ensuring a dynamic start to your storytelling journey.

Exhibition

Create an interactive 'Sustainability Through the Lens' digital gallery on a school or community website, allowing virtual visitors to explore your photo series and accompanying vendor interviews, while adding their own reflections and feedback through a comment section. Facilitate an 'Art of the Market' multi-sensory exhibition, inviting community members to experience the photo narratives alongside artworks inspired by the market, created by students from different grades, each depicting their interpretation of the vendors' stories and market aesthetics.
