Purpose

Create a vibrant, multi-disciplinary project where your passion for music, visual art, and storytelling converge into a comprehensive album. This journey is not just about the finished product, but also the collaborative process, self-directed skill development, and thoughtful reflection on artistic choices. Through linking your creative work with community partners and peers, you will enhance critical communication and problem-solving skills, while forging emotional connections with your audience. This experience will challenge you to push creative boundaries, embracing critique and revision as essential to refining your craft. Celebrate your learning and progress through public exhibitions and digital platforms, leaving a lasting impression both on your community and yourself.

Learning goals

Through this project, you will develop collaboration skills by co-designing and making shared decisions with peers. You will also hone effective communication by expressing your artistic process and presenting your work. Engage in self-directed learning by applying feedback and reflecting on your growth throughout the creative process. Utilize critical thinking to explore innovative storytelling approaches that connect emotionally with your audience. These experiences will enhance your artistic skills and deepen your understanding of storytelling through music and visuals.

  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the project, you will create a full-length album consisting of ten garage rock styled songs, with a strong influence from pop-punk and the 2000’s indie movement. You'll also produce a music video, potentially featuring a film with your friends or a stylized lyric video. In addition, you'll craft a lyric booklet showcasing your art and detailing your creative process, culminating in a standard packaged CD. These products allow for expression and expansion of your ideas, fostering a comprehensive storytelling experience through music and visuals.

Launch

Organize a collaborative listening session where you and your peers explore iconic garage rock and pop punk music videos and albums from the 2000s. Discuss how these works use storytelling to create emotional connections and brainstorm how you can incorporate similar techniques into your own project. This will serve as an inspiration and provide a foundational understanding of the genre's storytelling potential as you launch your own creative endeavor.

Exhibition

Host a live listening party and art showcase where you present your album, music video, and booklet artwork to classmates, teachers, and community members. Include an interactive Q&A session to discuss your creative process, challenges faced, and personal insights gained throughout the project. Capture the event on video and share it on social media platforms, along with digital versions of your album and art booklet, to widen your audience and foster continuous discussion and feedback.
