Purpose

Your project is designed to transform second-hand clothing into unique fashion pieces while raising awareness about the environmental impact of fast fashion. By engaging in hands-on activities like sewing and screen printing, you'll explore innovative design solutions and consider the environmental benefits of upcycling. This experience challenges you to think critically about sustainable fashion and encourages you to collaborate with community partners, thereby fostering skills in communication, problem-solving, and creativity.

Learning goals

Your learning goals for this project are to apply advanced sewing and design techniques learned from community partners, effectively address and communicate the environmental impact of fast fashion, and improve your critical thinking by comparing your initial designs with your final pieces. You will also enhance your collaboration skills through peer interactions, shared decision-making, and leadership roles during the 'Thrift Shop Scavenger Hunt' and design critiques. Lastly, you aim to develop effective communication skills by engaging with diverse audiences during the exhibition and reflecting on feedback to refine your designs.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Throughout your project, focus on creating a series of upcycled fashion items by revamping thrifted clothes using sewing, screen printing, and embroidery techniques. For each piece, experiment with distinct customizations that reflect your learning and creativity. Your final product collection will be a curated selection of these transformed garments, each with a unique story that you will display and sell during the exhibition.

Launch

Kick off your project with a collaborative 'Thrift Shop Scavenger Hunt.' Organize teams to explore local thrift stores, such as Salvation Army and Goodwill, to discover unique clothing items perfect for upcycling. This activity will not only spotlight the sheer volume of discarded clothing but also spark creative ideas for your designs. Upon returning, share your findings and initial design concepts with peers to set the stage for your project journey.

Exhibition

During the exhibition, set up a curated display that reflects the transformation journey of each clothing piece, highlighting before and after photos alongside the finished products. Organize a fashion show where your redesigned pieces are modeled, inviting community members and local representatives to engage and learn about sustainable fashion. Host a sale, with proceeds supporting an eco-friendly initiative, and prepare a presentation that communicates your insights on fast fashion's impact, inviting feedback to further refine your work.
