Purpose

Design and implement a Stuffed Animal Restoration Studio where you revitalize plush toys, reflecting on the significance of restoration and personal growth. Engage in hands-on learning with each project, honing sewing techniques and effective communication as you interact with community partners. Exhibit your level of craftsmanship through a final showcase, including insights related to mental health themes such as processing complex emotions, and the impact of personal development. Foster a deeper understanding of socio-emotional development by comparing past attempts with new achievements, documenting your journey and insights.

Learning goals

Develop proficiency in sewing and textile repair to restore stuffed animals to their original form. Enhance customer service skills through effective communication and empathy during interactions with community partners and clients. Cultivate critical thinking by employing innovative restoration techniques and problem-solving skills relevant to the project. Strengthen collaboration and leadership by co-designing processes and sharing decision-making with peers. Foster reflective practices by assessing personal growth through restoration attempts and their outcomes, keeping a focus on tasks that are safe and feasible within the given context.

  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout your project, create a portfolio showcasing the transformation of each stuffed animal, including before-and-after photos and detailed process documentation. Develop a customer feedback log to record interactions and reflect on communication effectiveness. Your final exhibition will feature the restored stuffed animals, highlighting your sewing skills and collaboration with community partners. Create a video presentation narrating your learning journey, emphasizing the socio-emotional aspects of the project. Additionally, design a restoration manual or guide, capturing best practices and offering tips for aspiring restorers.

Launch

Begin your project with a storytelling circle where you share why stuffed animal restoration is meaningful to you, and encourage peers to share their own plushie-related experiences. Set up an interactive demo station where you demonstrate initial restoration techniques on a plushie from your collection. Use the session to create a supportive, empathetic environment, and invite peers to get involved by brainstorming on collaborative roles they can take during the project.

Exhibition

Set up a heartfelt exhibit called "Stuffed Animal Revival" in the 12th-grade hall, showcasing your restored plushies side-by-side with "before" and "after" photos. Invite peers, family, and community members, including your mom, to celebrate your craftsmanship and efforts. Consider adding a demonstration station where you illustrate the sewing and cleaning techniques used, enhancing the interactive experience.
