Purpose

This project engages high school students in the creation of a machine learning app using real-world data, offering them the chance to explore and innovate within the realm of AI technology in a collaborative setting. By choosing relevant datasets, students will tackle complex problems and adapt AI models to reflect issues pertinent to their communities, fostering critical thought and effective problem-solving. Students will demonstrate content expertise by designing AI models and mobile apps, developing skills in computer science while experiencing hands-on learning through self-directed inquiry, peer feedback, and iterative improvement.

Learning goals

Students will learn to construct and deploy a machine learning-powered app by selecting and processing real-world data. They will develop critical thinking skills as they analyze data inclusion choices and app design decisions, and learn to iteratively improve through peer feedback and revision. Collaboration will be pivotal as they work in teams, engaging in shared decision-making and presenting their app school-wide. Additionally, students will advance their effective communication skills by answering questions and exhibiting their projects, while self-directed learning will be emphasized through ongoing self-reflection and teacher-guided evaluations.

Standards
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 3B-AP-08 - Describe how artificial intelligence drives many software and physical systems.
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 3B-AP-09 - Implement an artificial intelligence algorithm to play a game against a human opponent or solve a problem.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout this project, students will collaboratively design and develop a mobile app utilizing App Lab and an AI model created from a real-world dataset in AI Lab. By the culmination of the project, each group will present and deliver their app, incorporating insights gained from peer and teacher critiques and revisions. The apps will be showcased school-wide through posters containing links, enabling students to share their innovative applications driven by machine learning technologies.

Launch

Kick off the project with a brainstorming session where students identify important issues in their communities that could be addressed using an AI-driven app. Facilitate group discussions to explore various datasets related to these issues, encouraging students to consider how data selection can influence outcomes. Use a collaborative platform to visualize potential datasets and AI model ideas. Provide a brief interactive demo or tutorial on App Lab and AI Lab to spark curiosity and set the stage for their hands-on activities.

Exhibition

At the conclusion of the project, students will exhibit their AI-driven mobile app through a school-wide showcase. They will create informative posters with QR codes linking to their app, allowing peers and teachers to interact with the app directly using their own devices. Additionally, students will engage visitors by explaining their design process and answering questions, fostering a deeper understanding of AI and mobile application development within the school community.
