Purpose

The project immerses high school students in the practical world of sports medicine by engaging them in real-world applications related to baseball. Through hands-on experiences, collaborating with local sports medicine professionals, and practicing on an actual baseball team, students explore injury prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. They develop vital skills in communication, critical thinking, and collaboration, culminating in an exhibition where they present videos and informative posters. This immersive experience connects classroom knowledge with meaningful, real-world scenarios that resonate with their interests and future aspirations.

Learning goals

Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of sports injuries common to baseball players, focusing on effective diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies. By collaborating with community partners like SD Sports medicine professionals, they will hone critical communication and interviewing skills, enabling them to gather real-world insights. Through hands-on practice with the HTHCV baseball team, students will develop practical skills in treating and rehabilitating sports injuries. They will culminate their experience by producing instructional videos on joint wrapping techniques and creating educational materials on injury prevention, demonstrating their ability to apply learned content and communicate their findings effectively.

Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create instructional videos and a detailed poster presentation as part of their project. The videos will showcase techniques for wrapping and rehabilitating various baseball-related injuries such as ankle sprains, shoulder strains, and knee injuries. The poster will present strategies for injury prevention and highlight key findings from their interviews with sports medicine professionals. These products will be developed collaboratively in teams, with each student contributing their insights and skills to ensure high-quality, informative outcomes.

Launch

Kick off the project with a guest speaker session featuring a professional sports medicine expert from SDSU, UCSD, or the Padres, who shares real-world insights into diagnosing and treating baseball injuries. Following the talk, organize a hands-on workshop where students get their first experience wrapping joints using professional-level supplies. This initial immersive experience sets the stage for students to explore and engage deeply with the practical and theoretical elements of sports medicine throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their expertise at a community exhibition by presenting videos that demonstrate practical, hands-on techniques for wrapping various joints, offering an engaging visual guide to sports medicine. They will also create an informative poster on injury prevention strategies, integrating knowledge gained from interviews with local sports medicine professionals. During the event, students will hold live demonstrations and discussions, confidently explaining the diagnosis and treatment processes they practiced with the HTHCV baseball team to actively engage the audience.
