Purpose

This project empowers 11th-grade students to engage in real-world learning by examining how language influences cultural identity and societal values. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, students will develop critical thinking skills by crafting and delivering presentations on relevant community issues. They will hone their effective communication abilities through reflective activities, such as digital portfolios and exhibitions, while considering diverse linguistic choices. By working with local advocacy groups, students will use language as a tool to address and solve real-world problems, shaping a more inclusive and empathetic community.

Learning goals

Students will explore and discuss how language shapes cultural identity and community values through analyzing real-world examples. They will collaboratively design language-focused projects that address community issues, leveraging their ability to communicate effectively and empathetically. The students will showcase their learning by presenting to peers and community partners, demonstrating critical thinking and reflection on their language use in context.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Over the 10-week project, students will collaboratively create a comprehensive digital portfolio showcasing their recorded reflections, projects, and presentations, highlighting their understanding and application of language in cultural contexts. They will also prepare and deliver speeches to local community advocacy groups, using their linguistic skills to address community issues. To culminate the experience, students will present their work at a reflective exhibition event, inviting feedback from peers and community stakeholders, providing an opportunity to discuss their linguistic growth and its impact on cultural identity and societal values.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, orchestrate an interactive community forum inviting local language activists, advocacy groups, and students to engage in a dialogue about the role of language in cultural identity and societal values. Have students participate in breakout sessions where they collaboratively analyze and debate linguistic dilemmas with community partners, grounding the discussion in real-world contexts. This launch will ignite curiosity and set the stage for students to examine the complexities of communication and its impact within their communities throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a community language symposium, showcasing their digital portfolios and projects developed with community partners. This event will feature student-led presentations on how various linguistic choices influence cultural identity and address real-world concerns. Attendees, including local advocacy groups and community members, will engage in discussions, provide feedback, and contribute to a collaborative reflection on the power of language in societal contexts.
