Purpose

The solar system mural project immerses 2nd graders in a multidisciplinary exploration of space, combining art, science, and math to foster collaboration and creativity. Students will investigate planetary characteristics and engage in hands-on activities to construct a scale model, nurturing critical thinking and communication skills. Through peer feedback and self-directed learning, the project cultivates understanding of scientific standards while encouraging self-reflection and growth.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design a solar system mural, enhancing their understanding of planetary characteristics and scale while engaging in hands-on science exploration. They will develop essential skills in collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication by participating in group research, peer feedback sessions, and shared decision-making processes. The project encourages self-directed learning as students use feedback to refine their contributions and artistically express their newfound knowledge.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2.AG.4.1 - Objects and organisms can be described in terms of their parts.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2-ETS1-2 - Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct a solar system mural, where each contributes a planet piece showcasing accurate sizes and unique characteristics. By researching and illustrating planet features, students will develop individual roles within the group to complete the larger mural. The project will culminate in a classroom exhibition where students present the mural and their findings, engaging peers and teachers in discussions about planetary attributes and their creative process.

Launch

The project begins with students experiencing an immersive planetarium-style presentation, where lights and sounds simulate the solar system's vastness. Students take "space missions" using VR equipment to explore individual planets over the course of a week, engaging their curiosity and sparking excitement for further exploration. This interactive approach sets the stage for researching and artistically representing the planets in their collaborative solar system mural.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will showcase their completed solar system mural during an interactive classroom exhibition. Families and community members will be invited to view the mural and attend student-led presentations where pupils articulate their research findings and creative process. The exhibition will include hands-on exploration stations, providing attendees a chance to engage with planet models and understand scale relationships within our solar system. Students will also participate in reflective discussions about their learning journey with peers and guests, fostering skills in effective communication and collaboration.
