Purpose

This project empowers students to explore and represent their family dynamics and community identity through art and storytelling, fostering a deep connection to their personal and local history. By engaging with community partners and conducting fieldwork, students develop critical thinking, effective communication, and collaboration skills. The project's goal is to create a living exhibition that celebrates cultural diversity, encourages reflection on historical influences, and showcases students' growth through interactive digital timelines and public presentations.

Learning goals

Students will critically explore and represent family dynamics and community identities through artistic and narrative forms, enhancing their understanding of cultural and historical influences. They will engage in collaborative community-based projects to practice effective communication, problem-solving, and shared decision-making, promoting deeper insights into societal contributions. The unit will develop students' abilities to analyze historical transformations using comparative approaches, with an emphasis on digital literacy and storytelling to document and celebrate their community's unique attributes.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will create an interactive digital timeline, incorporating stories and artifacts that highlight family and community history through visual and auditory media. They will also produce a documentary project analyzing historical community transformations, culminating in a public screening. Additionally, students will develop a digital portfolio showcasing their learning journey, including a comparative analysis of historical and current community profiles and reflective journal entries.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a "Culture Connection Fair," inviting diverse community groups to present and share aspects of their cultural identities through engaging displays, performances, and interactive sessions. This immersive fair fosters immediate curiosity as students and community members build connections by exchanging stories and traditions. Encourage students to document their initial thoughts and questions in their personal reflective journals, setting the stage for their upcoming projects focused on historical influences and community identity.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Digital Heritage Exhibition' where students present their digital portfolios and interactive maps, showcasing stories of historical influences and family dynamics. Visitors can explore multimedia narratives through art and storytelling and engage in meaningful discussions with the creators. This event serves as a platform for students to share their reflections and insights, celebrating their understanding of community and cultural identity transformations over time.
