Through this Civic Action Project, 12th-grade students actively engage with pressing community issues, fostering civic responsibility and leadership skills. Working in pairs, students will research, propose, and implement actionable strategies to effect positive change by addressing local policy challenges. By taking initiative and influencing policy, students not only contribute to meaningful developments in their community but also gain insights into the impact of civic engagement, which can guide future participation and advocacy efforts. This project encourages critical thinking and collaboration while emphasizing real-world problem solving and tangible outcomes.
Learning goals
Students will investigate and analyze their chosen civic issue, developing a nuanced understanding of related policies and community impacts. They will design and execute a strategic action plan to address the issue, refining their critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. By reflecting on the outcomes and process of their projects, they will gain insights into the mechanics of civic engagement and learn how effective actions can contribute to policy reform and civic participation across various levels.
Products
Students will create a comprehensive civic action portfolio that includes research on their chosen community issue, a proposed action plan with clear objectives, and documentation of the steps taken to enact change. Each team will produce a short video presentation showcasing their process, outcomes, and reflections on the project, focusing on how their efforts can influence future civic engagement. Teams will also design infographics summarizing the local impact of their initiatives, supporting broader community discussions and advocacy efforts. These products are shared at a culminating civic fair for peers and community members, enabling dialogue and further inspiration for local policy development.
Launch
To launch the Civic Action Project, students will participate in a community issues gallery walk where they examine various images, news articles, and artifacts representing local policy challenges. They will discuss in pairs the impact of these issues and brainstorm initial action ideas. This activity will ignite curiosity and set the stage for research and project development by allowing students to see firsthand the diversity of civic issues needing attention in their community.
Exhibition
After completing the Civic Action Projects, each student team will present their findings and proposed solutions at the CAP Expo. Teams will create interactive presentations that not only showcase their initiative but also invite community members and policy-makers to engage in discussions about the potential impacts and future applications of their work. The expo will feature booths where students can provide multimedia displays, live demonstrations, and Q&A sessions to encourage dialogue and partnership opportunities. Through these exhibitions, students can effectively communicate how their projects serve as a catalyst for informed civic participation and policy advancement.
