This project invites students to explore and tackle healthcare scarcity by actively engaging with their community to devise meaningful solutions. Through dynamic, hands-on activities, students collaborate with local healthcare partners to uncover the socio-economic factors affecting access to care. They will create resource cards and facilitate interactive learning experiences that inform and inspire community action. This initiative equips students with vital skills while fostering a sense of responsibility to address healthcare accessibility challenges within their community.
Learning goals
Students will actively explore healthcare scarcity's impact on their community and develop practical solutions to improve access for underserved populations. By engaging with community healthcare professionals, they will enhance research, data analysis, and communication skills as they map local resources and transportation routes. Through hands-on workshops and interactive activities, students will deepen their understanding of socio-economic disparities and work collaboratively to create tools that connect community members with essential health services.
Products
Students will develop interactive digital maps and multimedia booklets that explore transportation routes and local healthcare facilities to be displayed at the Community Health Fair Day. They will assemble comprehensive resource kits containing laminated community resource cards and navigational guides, which provide information for accessing healthcare services, to share during the Healthcare Advocacy Gallery Walk. Students will work hands-on to create engaging booths with interactive displays and presentations, effectively communicating their research and proposed solutions for healthcare scarcity to the community.
Launch
Begin the project with an immersive 'Understanding Access Quest' scavenger hunt that actively engages students by having them gather real-world insights through visits and virtual tours of local health facilities. Encourage direct interaction and observations by including interviews with healthcare staff and community members, offering a comprehensive view on resource availability and socio-economic disparities. Further, delve into the 'Access to Care Fair' simulation where students experience real-life scenarios that reveal the obstacles various demographics face in accessing healthcare, fostering a deeper understanding of these impacts.
Exhibition
During the Community Health Fair Day, students will engage attendees with hands-on activities at interactive booths, showcasing laminated resource cards and research findings. Students will lead dynamic demonstrations and discussions through multimedia presentations, alongside healthcare professionals, encouraging community dialogues. The Healthcare Advocacy Gallery Walk at the annual spring showcase will actively involve small group tours, fostering meaningful conversations around innovative solutions to healthcare access gaps.
