The Challenge

To create interior designs that are both sustainable and practical, there is a need to address how sustainability can be integrated into accessible, affordable design without compromising aesthetic appeal. The challenge lies in balancing environmental impact with cost-effectiveness, ensuring that sustainable practices remain inspiring and functional rather than merely utilitarian.

Challenge Question

How can interior designers effectively integrate sustainability with affordable, practical usage while maintaining creative passion and the ability to convey cultural stories and emotional depth in design choices?

Standards
  • [Massachusetts] A.D.P.06 - Performing: Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work. Perform a dance work that causes audience reflection by performing technical skills with artistic expression, clarity, musicality, and stylistic nuance.
  • [Massachusetts] A.D.R.08 - Responding: Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work. Analyze the ways their own cultural and personal perspectives and bias impact how they understand a dance work.
  • [Massachusetts] A.D.R.09 - Responding: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work. Identify how bias, culture, and privilege can impact the criteria we use to evaluate dance work.
  • [Massachusetts] A.D.Co.10 - Connecting: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art. Explain the development of their aesthetic vision as a dancer and how it is represented in a movement piece.
  • [Massachusetts] A.D.Cr.02 - Creating: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. Document strategies they use regularly to organize their artistic ideas (e.g., keeping a journal).
Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Learning Partners and Clients

Art teacher and a local interior designer will serve as learning partners, providing expert insights and guidance throughout the studio. Collaboration with these partners offers students the chance to learn directly from professionals in the field. Engaging with a local interior designer connects students to real-world practices and challenges in their community, while the art teacher supports the integration of artistic expression and cultural narratives into interior design projects.
