Purpose
The purpose of this project is to immerse students in the rich architectural and cultural diversity of Spanish-speaking countries while enhancing their Spanish vocabulary related to housing and design. Through engaging, hands-on activities, students will explore how cultural and environmental factors shape architectural styles and apply this understanding to create their own house models. This inquiry-driven approach fosters deeper learning, encouraging students to reflect on cultural similarities and differences, communicate effectively about their designs, and collaborate to refine their ideas in a creative classroom environment.
Learning goals
Students will develop their skills in effective communication by presenting their house designs and the cultural influences behind them, using Spanish vocabulary related to architecture. They will gain an understanding of how cultural and environmental factors shape housing across Spanish-speaking countries, applying this knowledge to their own projects. Through creating house models, students will engage in critical thinking and creativity, while reflecting on similarities and differences between their designs and traditional homes. The project encourages collaborative learning through peer reviews and feedback sessions, fostering a deeper appreciation of global architectural diversity.
Competencies
Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
Products
Throughout this learning experience, students will create detailed digital presentations showcasing their house designs along with cultural influences. They will construct 3D models of their houses using recycled materials, incorporating architectural elements inspired by Spanish-speaking countries. These models will be displayed in an interactive exhibition where students offer audio descriptions in Spanish of their design choices. Additionally, students will produce annotated blueprints and written descriptions, exchanging these during collaborative peer reviews for feedback and refinement.
Launch
Introduce the project with an immersive 'Global Architecture Discovery Day.' Begin with students engaging in virtual tours and viewing photographs of distinct houses from various Spanish-speaking countries. Follow this exploration with discussions that highlight regional architectural styles and materials, encouraging students to note unique cultural and environmental influences. Encourage students to ask questions and share initial thoughts on potential design inspirations for their own house models.
Exhibition
Students will create an 'Interactive Global Neighborhood' in the classroom, displaying their 3D house models on a large map. They will provide audio descriptions in Spanish to highlight the cultural influences embedded in their designs. Visiting classes will explore this exhibition, engaging with the models and learning through narrated explanations of the architectural styles and cultural elements inspired by various Spanish-speaking countries. This immersive experience will foster cross-classroom dialogue and appreciation for global influences.
