The primary purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in thoughtful inquiry about the future of humanity through a scientific lens. By investigating whether humans should establish a permanent settlement on Mars or address and solve Earth's critical issues, students will critically analyze scientific data and collaborate with community partners. The project encourages exploration, fosters deeper understanding of planetary science and ecosystem management, and culminates in creating meaningful proposals to be shared in a school-wide exhibition.
Learning goals
Students will analyze and interpret data from diverse scientific sources to form evidence-based conclusions on the viability of human settlement on Mars versus resolving Earth's environmental challenges. They will engage with community partners for informed perspectives and critique, refining ideas through feedback to enhance their final proposals. Learners will hone presentation skills, conveying complex ideas during the school-wide exposition, demonstrating understanding and consideration of societal impacts of space exploration and environmental stewardship. Through reflection, they will deepen their understanding, assessing personal and collective responsibility toward planetary health.
Products
Throughout the project, students will create detailed visual models outlining the pros and cons of permanent settlement on Mars versus addressing climate change on Earth. They will compile research, conduct experiments, and collect scientific data to support their arguments. As a final product, students will craft a comprehensive proposal, either advocating for solutions to Earth's environmental challenges or for the pursuit of Mars colonization, which they will present at the school-wide exposition. Additionally, students may create campaign materials to support their chosen proposal and simulate the first stages of implementing their ideas locally.
Launch
Kick off the project with a screening of the documentary "Goodnight Oppy," which provides insightful perspectives on the Mars rovers Opportunity and Perseverance. Following the documentary, facilitate a brainstorming session where students discuss initial thoughts and questions about Mars exploration and the challenges currently facing Earth. This will help students begin to engage with the essential question while sparking curiosity and setting the stage for collaboration with community partners.
Exhibition
Students will showcase their proposals at a school-wide exposition, engaging the community in dialogue about the future of humanity. They will present their analysis and scientific interpretation supported by data, illustrating solutions either for Mars colonization or Earth's restoration. Invited community partners, including local leaders and professors, will attend to provide feedback and encourage discourse. The exhibition will feature interactive displays and mock models to visualize proposed solutions, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas among presenters and attendees.
