Purpose

In this project, 9th-grade students collaborate to write a compelling short story anthology, exploring diverse literary elements that resonate with real-world connections. They engage in hands-on activities, brainstorming unique story ideas and crafting narratives that captivate their audience. Throughout the four-week journey, students practice effective communication by sharing their progress through presentations and reflective discussions. They exercise critical thinking and problem-solving as they navigate creative challenges and support each other in their roles as co-authors and critical partners. This immersive experience culminates in an anthology that represents their collaborative efforts and showcases their stories to the school community.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively write an anthology of short stories that reflect diverse perspectives and empathetic communication. They will engage in co-designing their stories with peers, employing critical thinking to develop authentic narratives that resonate with their community. Through this process, students will apply literary elements dynamically to enhance storytelling, while honing the skills necessary for effective presentations and reflections on their work.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively produce a short story anthology that highlights diverse narrative techniques, character development, and cultural themes. Each group will contribute an original short story, co-edited to integrate feedback from peer review sessions. The anthology will also feature author reflections and multimedia presentations, in which students communicate the intent and inspiration behind their stories before a live audience. This collection of stories will be digitally published and showcased during a community literary night, encouraging authentic engagement with a broader audience.

Launch

Kick off the project by inviting a local author for an interactive storytelling session, where students actively listen and discuss the literary elements that make the stories engaging. Following the session, facilitate small group discussions where students brainstorm ideas for short stories they are passionate about, ensuring that every voice is heard. Encourage them to collaboratively draft story outlines, focusing on key literary elements they want to explore, while considering how their stories will connect with their peers and the wider community.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a literary showcase event where they present their short stories to peers, teachers, and invited community members. Each student will have the opportunity to read excerpts of their story aloud, followed by a Q&A session to discuss themes, character development, and personal insights. Collaborative displays, featuring story drafts and the creative process, will provide a visual narrative of their journey in writing, encouraging reflection and appreciation of diverse storytelling styles.
