Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage second graders in an immersive and interdisciplinary exploration of the solar system by integrating art, science, and math. Through hands-on model building and collaborative research, students will strengthen skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. By participating in community interactions and hosting exhibitions, they will develop a deeper understanding of celestial bodies while practicing teamwork and leadership.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of the solar system by researching and representing the characteristics of an assigned planet, culminating in the creation of a collaborative scale model. They will strengthen skills in collaboration, communication, and critical thinking by engaging in peer critiques, revising their initial designs, and presenting their findings and creative stories. Through interactions with community partners and the class exhibition, students will deepen their understanding of how the design of objects, such as their planet models, serves specific functions, meeting standards around both scientific and communication competencies.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2.AG.4.1 - Objects and organisms can be described in terms of their parts.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2-ETS1-2 - Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will collaboratively create scale models of their assigned planets, incorporating artistic design and scientific accuracy. They will also develop engaging digital portfolios documenting their research, sketches, and completed models to showcase their learning journey. Additionally, they will craft and perform original planet-themed stories, creatively communicating their understanding of each planet's unique features during the 'Planet Palooza.'

Launch

To launch the learning experience, kick off with a 'Cosmic Carnival,' where students rotate through a series of engaging planet-themed mini-games and activities. These activities will include a 'Planet Parade' where students visit stations dedicated to learning fun facts about the planets, helping them gather initial ideas for their project. The carnival atmosphere encourages exploration and excitement, setting a dynamic tone for the solar system model project.

Exhibition

Students will present their projects at the 'Planet Palooza' exhibition, transforming the classroom into a mini-space gallery. Arrangement of scale models and digital portfolios at each station allows students to explain their research, design process, and creative storytelling to family and community members. This interactive gallery walk provides an authentic audience for students to practice their communication skills and proudly showcase their collaborative and critical thinking efforts.
