Purpose

This project engages students in an exploration of the evolution of popular music, using K-pop as a lens to understand broader social, cultural, and technological influences. Through hands-on activities such as creating multimedia timelines, producing podcasts, and choreographing flash mobs, students deepen their understanding of global cultural dynamics. The project promotes collaboration, critical thinking, and self-directed learning, enabling students to draw connections between historical contexts and contemporary music genres, while honing key competencies in communication and content expertise.

Learning goals

By the end of this project, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how social, cultural, and technological forces have influenced the evolution of popular music genres such as K-pop. They will refine skills in critical thinking and collaboration by analyzing historical trends and co-designing multimedia presentations and podcast episodes. Students will enhance communication and self-directed learning by reflecting on their own cultural heritage, engaging in choreographed performances, and articulating insights in discussions and written work. Through the application of historical analysis, students will construct well-reasoned arguments using primary sources, focusing on the interconnectedness of global music trends.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create a multimedia timeline that traces the evolution of popular music genres, complemented by a three-page analytical paper discussing these changes. They will co-produce a podcast episode that critically examines the development of a chosen music genre and its intersection with K-pop, highlighting social, cultural, and technological influences. Additionally, students will choreograph and perform a K-pop dance routine, capturing the historical impact of pop music, which they will discuss in a subsequent forum. These projects will engage students in research, creative expression, and reflection, emphasizing collaborative and communication skills.

Launch

The project begins with a dynamic 'K-pop Flash Mob and Discussion Forum', where students first engage in an energetic K-pop dance routine they've choreographed. This is immediately followed by an interactive forum discussing the global influence and cross-cultural impact of K-pop and other popular music genres. Setting this creative and collaborative tone encourages students to actively participate, sparking curiosity about music's historical and cultural evolution.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the project, organize a 'Music Through Time' showcase where students present their multimedia timelines and podcasts to peers, teachers, and community members. This exhibition will feature the students' collaborative dance performances and open discussion forums where they share insights gained from reflecting on their personal cultural connections to music. Attendees can interact with the content displayed and engage in conversations about the historical journey and global impact of various music genres.
