Purpose

The purpose of this project is to connect students with the foundational individual rights guaranteed by the US Bill of Rights and the Indiana Constitution, examining how these rights impact their daily lives and societal structures. Through hands-on activities and real-world learning experiences, students will explore constitutional concepts, engage with community partners, and creatively present their insights, fostering a deeper understanding of individual rights and their significance in shaping governance and society. The project aims to build critical thinking skills and promote active participation in civic life, encouraging students to reflect on and discuss their own experiences and perspectives related to these fundamental rights.

Learning goals

Students will explore and explain the individual rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and Article I of the Indiana Constitution, investigating their historical origins and present-day applications. They will analyze the essential ideas of constitutional government, including concepts like rule of law, due process, and freedom of religion, understanding how these principles contribute to society and individual freedoms. Through hands-on activities, students will gain a deeper understanding of how constitutional rights affect their daily lives and inform societal structures and movements.

Products

Students will create engaging skits or presentations illustrating specific rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the Indiana Constitution, focusing on real-world applications and historical contexts. These performances will form the centerpiece of the "Rights Festival," allowing students to educate attendees through creative storytelling. Additionally, students will design visual aids and interactive displays for the 'Rights Fair,' offering an immersive experience that demonstrates the relevance and impact of individual rights in modern life.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Rights Scavenger Hunt' across the school, where students uncover clues related to individual rights in their everyday environment. These clues may lead them to places like the library, the principal’s office, or student-led clubs, each revealing a lesson about rights in action. As they navigate this adventure, students will actively collect information about how the rights from the Bill of Rights and Indiana Constitution manifest in their school community, setting the stage for deeper exploration.

Exhibition

Students will stage a 'Rights in Action Showcase' for family members, local community partners, and peers. Each group will perform skits or short presentations that demonstrate the significance and application of specific rights from the Bill of Rights and the Indiana Constitution. Performances will be infused with historical context and modern-day examples to highlight the enduring relevance of these rights. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with students, ask questions, and learn through the interactive performance about the rights that shape governance and individual freedoms. This exhibition will serve as a culmination of the students' explorations, providing a dynamic platform for sharing insights and celebrating their creative work.
