Purpose

This project immerses students in the dynamic world of lexicography, bridging the gap between traditional dictionaries and contemporary slang through hands-on activities. Students investigate cultural and historical origins of language, critically analyze social media's impact, and hone their communication skills by crafting modern slang definitions. By creating an interactive webpage and showcasing their modern slang dictionaries, students engage with the vital role language plays in reflecting societal shifts. Through collaboration, critique, and vibrant discussions, learners cultivate a deep understanding of language evolution and its implications in real-time communication.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of how language evolves through cultural shifts and societal changes, focusing specifically on the addition of slang to daily communication. They will acquire research skills to trace the origins and evolution of slang and practice effective communication by drafting precise definitions. Additionally, students will enhance analytical skills by examining the influence of social media on language dynamics, providing insights into the rapid spread and potential permanency of contemporary slang. Through collaborative work, students will refine their ability to give and receive feedback, fostering a deeper engagement with language nuances and trends.

Products

Throughout the project, students will develop an interactive webpage showcasing their compiled dictionary of modern slang, highlighting definitions, cultural origins, and social media influences. This webpage will serve as a resource for peers, featuring multimedia presentations and analyses from the Social Media Slang Slam event. By the end, students will present their completed dictionary at the showcase, answering questions and providing insights into the evolution and permanence of the slang terminology they have researched.

Launch

Begin with a dynamic Slang Origin Scavenger Hunt, where students explore and present slang terms from diverse cultural backgrounds using multimedia tools, showcasing their journey into everyday language. Follow with a Social Media Slang Slam event, where students analyze trending digital slang from platforms like TikTok, debating their potential permanency and cultural influence through creative and interactive presentations. These activities serve as an immersive introduction to the project's focus while encouraging student expression and engagement with contemporary language trends.

Exhibition

Students will host a Dictionary Showcase, creating an engaging event where they unveil their modern slang dictionaries to peers, teachers, and invited guests. Each student will have a booth displaying their work, offering insights into their research process and the cultural significance of chosen slang terms. Interactive stations will allow attendees to explore definitions and contribute their thoughts, fostering a dynamic dialogue on language evolution. Through guided tours and Q&A sessions, students will demonstrate their understanding of the impact of social media on language, showcasing their hard work and creativity.
