Purpose

The aim of this learning experience is to foster a deeper understanding of kindness and empathy by engaging kindergarten students in meaningful community interactions. Through a project with a local senior center, students will develop self-directed learning, effective communication, collaboration, and content expertise. They will engage in creating 'Happiness Cards' and a kindness-themed board game while reflecting on personal acts of kindness. This project promotes an academic mindset by helping students establish a sense of belonging and identity through intergenerational connection and shared storytelling.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project include students enhancing self-directed learning by seeking and employing feedback during activities, developing effective communication skills by engaging empathetically with seniors, and collaborating through shared storytelling and role-playing. Students will also deepen their content expertise by applying knowledge to create meaningful interactions and fostering an academic mindset that strengthens their sense of community and belonging. Ultimately, students will gain a deeper appreciation for kindness and empathy, learning to express these values in their everyday interactions.

Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout this project, students will create handmade 'Happiness Cards' or artwork for seniors, fostering creative expression and empathy. They will also collaboratively design and develop a kindness-themed board game, crafting unique game pieces and establishing rules. By the end of the project, these tangible products will serve as mediums for intergenerational interaction, demonstrating the students’ understanding and practice of kindness.

Launch

Gather the kindergarten students in a cozy circle and invite one of the senior center representatives to share heartwarming stories of kindness they've experienced or observed. Encourage the children to listen carefully and then take turns sharing their own stories of how they've helped someone at home or school. This storytelling activity will set the tone for a collaborative and empathetic project, fostering a sense of excitement and purpose as the students embark on their kindness journey.

Exhibition

Celebrate the conclusion of the project by hosting a 'Kindness Celebration' where seniors and families join the classroom. During this event, students and seniors will share their personal stories of kindness and the emotions they conveyed in interactive storytelling circles. Each student will present their 'Happiness Card' or artwork in a special 'Kindness Exhibit', speaking about their experiences and reflections. Through these activities, students will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills and reflect on the impact of their actions. This exhibition not only highlights the students’ work but reinforces the importance of kindness in everyday interactions.
