Purpose

Students will engage in a week-long project that explores the characteristics of famous leaders and how these can be applied to their own lives to positively impact their school community. Through collaborative drama activities and discussions centered around the essential questions, students will identify and emulate leadership qualities, fostering self-directed learning and critical thinking. This project aims to build a sense of identity and belonging, allowing students to reflect on their roles as leaders within their community while developing academic and interpersonal skills.

Learning goals

Students will engage in collaborative conversations to explore the qualities of famous leaders and how these can be applied to positively influence their school community. Through guided drama experiences, they will identify and reflect on similarities between themselves and these leaders, fostering self-directed learning and self-knowledge. By establishing a sense of identity and belonging, students will enhance their academic mindset, while critically examining innovative approaches to address community challenges. They will also investigate what makes someone a leader and practice those skills in their everyday lives.

Standards
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1 - Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
  • TH:Pr6.2.a - Contribute to group guided drama experiences (e.g., process drama, story drama, creative drama) and informally share with peers.
  • TH:Cn10.K.a - With prompting and support, identify similarities between characters and oneself in dramatic play or a guided drama experience (e.g., process drama, story drama, creative drama).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a "Leadership Qualities Showcase," featuring posters and digital presentations that highlight famous leaders and their impactful qualities. Throughout the week, students will collaborate on a community project inspired by these leaders, such as organizing a kindness campaign or a school improvement initiative. By the end of the week, students will present their findings and share their community project outcomes in a school-wide exhibition, fostering dialogue and reflection on leadership and impact. Additionally, students will engage in daily reflective journals to connect leadership skills to their personal experiences and identify ways they can practice these skills in their everyday lives.

Launch

Start the project with a "Leader in Me" scavenger hunt where students explore the school to find examples of leadership qualities displayed by staff, students, or in school rules and decorations. Pair students in diverse groups to encourage collaborative conversations and share their findings. Use Kagan strategies to facilitate discussions about how these qualities can be practiced in their everyday lives. Conclude with a creative drama session where students act out scenarios that demonstrate leadership traits, fostering self-reflection and critical thinking.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Leadership Showcase" where they present their findings on famous leaders and propose actionable ideas to improve their school community. Each group will create a visual display or dramatic skit that highlights the qualities of their chosen leader and connects these traits to their own experiences and aspirations. The event will include interactive stations where peers and guests can engage in discussions, provide feedback, and reflect on how these leadership qualities can be applied in their everyday lives.
