Purpose

This project immerses students in a dynamic exploration of storytelling by connecting classic literature with contemporary narratives. Through engaging activities like role-playing, exhibitions, and storyboarding, students uncover the timeless nature of the Hero's Journey and its relevance in both Shakespearean works and Star Wars. The experience fosters critical thinking, creativity, and communication as students articulate and share their insights, ultimately crafting their own hero-centric stories.

Learning goals

Students will enhance their understanding of storytelling frameworks by analyzing and comparing the Hero's Journey in Shakespeare's works and Star Wars narratives. They'll develop effective communication skills by engaging in story circles, presenting ideas, and actively listening in discussions. Critical thinking will be honed through reflective journaling and critique sessions, allowing them to articulate personal insights and draw cultural parallels. The project aims to develop creativity as students create products like digital timelines and multimedia presentations, synthesizing their understanding of hero-centric storytelling across different media and times.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

By the conclusion of this project, students will have developed an interactive digital timeline that juxtaposes plot developments in Shakespearean plays and Star Wars movies, complete with written reflections for each major plot point. They will also produce a creative multimedia presentation that remixes and reimagines the Hero's Journey by blending scenes and elements from both Shakespeare and Star Wars through artwork, music, and narrative. Additionally, students will participate in a 'Heroes Hall of Fame' exhibition showcasing their crafted art pieces, dioramas, and interactive displays that illustrate various stages of the Hero’s Journey, providing a platform for reflection and presentation of their learning insights.

Launch

Kick off the project with "A Journey Through Time and Space," a dynamic scavenger hunt spread across the school, where students uncover clues relating to iconic characters from both Shakespeare and Star Wars. During their journey, students engage in captivating mini role-play activities, which echo the larger essential questions that will guide their learning process. Further immerse students in the thematic overlap of these worlds with an "Epic Heroes Quest," a stimulating live role-playing event that blends narrative elements from Shakespeare and Star Wars, prompting students to solve thematic challenges and set the stage for their project's deeper inquiry and collaboration.

Exhibition

Transform the school gymnasium into a 'Heroes Hall of Fame,' where students showcase their interpretative artworks, dioramas, and interactive digital projects detailing the stages of the Hero's Journey in both the Shakespearean and Star Wars narratives. Encourage engaging presentations where students explain their projects to peers, family, and community members, fostering meaningful discussions about storytelling parallels. Incorporate live role-play vignettes and multimedia displays that allow visitors to experience the characters and storylines firsthand.
