Purpose

Students will embark on a creative journey to compose music using Garageband, aiming to express emotions through their compositions. This hands-on project will guide them to utilize digital instruments, rhythms, and melodies in crafting a musical piece that reflects their intended emotional expression. Through collaboration, feedback, and self-reflection, students will develop a deeper understanding of music composition, culminating in a presentation to their peers and broader school community, showcasing their ability to convey emotion through music.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to express specific emotions through a music composition using Garageband. They will learn to document their musical ideas using standard and digital notation while effectively utilizing digital instruments and recording technology. Throughout the project, students will engage in self-directed learning, incorporating feedback from peers and teachers to refine their compositions. The final goal is for students to present a composition that not only demonstrates technical musical skills but also clearly conveys a chosen emotion to an audience.

Products

Students will create a two-part musical composition using Garageband that incorporates both major and minor sections, utilizes at least four different digital instruments, and includes an auto drum beat. Additionally, each student will record one audio track to integrate into their composition. The final product will be a unique musical piece that expresses a specific emotion, which students will present to their peers, buddy classrooms, and the graduation audience. Throughout the project, students will document their musical ideas using digital recording technology, maintaining a portfolio that showcases their creative process and reflections on how their work conveys emotions.

Launch

Begin the project by introducing students to Garageband through an interactive demo, showcasing its features and capabilities for music creation. Facilitate a hands-on workshop where students experiment with different instruments and recording functions to create simple sounds. Frame the session with the essential question, "Am I able to express specific emotions in a composition using Garageband?" Encourage discussion about how emotions are conveyed in music, linking to familiar songs and exploring their sound profiles. End the launch by outlining the project timeline and expectations, setting the stage for their creative compositions.

Exhibition

Students will present their final compositions in a "Musical Showcase" event within the school, where peers, teachers, and buddy rooms collaborate to listen and provide feedback. The compositions will also be shared with the graduation day audience, allowing students to convey the emotional intent behind their music to a broader community. This exhibition will serve as a platform for students to engage critically with their work, complete self-assessment, and receive constructive feedback from their classmates and community, reinforcing the expressive power of their musical creations.
