Purpose

The purpose of this project is to deepen students' understanding of the human body systems through engaging, hands-on experiences that connect to their everyday lives and interests. By co-designing and participating in a 'Body System Olympics' and hosting a 'Human Body Sports Fair,' students will actively apply what they learn in a collaborative setting. These activities are structured to promote critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning while helping students construct meaningful connections between their health, exercise habits, and body functions. Through reflection and assessment components, students will build self-awareness and develop personal health strategies to nurture lifelong well-being.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are to develop a comprehensive understanding of the human body systems and their role in physical activities. Students will conduct research and produce informative texts, enhancing their ability to ask questions and directly refer to texts for answers. They will refine their communication skills through exhibition and reflection activities, while also engaging in self-directed learning, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving through hands-on, inquiry-based tasks. Additionally, students will build content expertise by applying their knowledge to create models, assess heart health, and devise personal health plans.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.7 - Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.3.1 - Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will collaborate to design a 'Body System Olympics' event, crafting unique physical activities that showcase the functions of different body systems, like relays that illustrate the coordination necessary for teamwork. They'll also create visual and interactive displays for the 'Human Body Sports Fair,' where they will articulate how specific body systems function in their chosen sports and present personal health plans. As an ongoing project, students will maintain a 'Body System Reflection Journal,' recording their weekly insights, which will culminate in a final presentation reflecting their comprehensive understanding.

Launch

Start the project with the "Pulse Challenge," where students learn to measure their pulse and observe changes before and after participating in various physical activities. Facilitate a class discussion on the importance of heart health and how their favorite sports or activities impact their cardiovascular system. This experience will inspire curiosity and set the stage for the exploration of the human body's systems through interactive and engaging activities in the upcoming weeks.

Exhibition

Host an exciting 'Human Body Sports Fair' where students showcase their understanding of body systems through the sports and activities they've developed. Each student group will present their activity, demonstrating how a specific body system is engaged and contributes to the performance. They will also explain their personal health plan, emphasizing strategies to maintain heart health. Visitors, including peers and family members, will have the opportunity to engage in the activities and learn directly from the students' insights and experiences. The event will culminate with an interactive session where students reflect on how their projects have transformed their understanding of the human body and its role in active living.
